Implications for parents, after school carers and teachers
The 2007 Forum felt that the purpose of homework is to:
• reinforce what has been worked on in class
• monitor children's progress
• extend and challenge the students
• cater for students who want to do more
• address child's area/s of need
• teach good study habits, time management skills, independence
• involve parents in child's education
• train the children for life's challenges
The Forum noted the following benefits of homework
It provides opportunity for:
• study discipline
• routine
• time management
• priority management
• parents and teachers to be a aware of students' ability
• students learning at their pace
• classroom lesson reinforcement
• further / deeper interest
• independence
• research
The Forum noted the following quantity of homework as appropriate
• appropriate to the student - individualised
• balance / mix of activities
• twenty to thirty minutes per day increasing as the students move up through the grades
• reading every night / tables / writing extended responses
• not on weekends or holidays
• regular homework suspended if homework is given for assessment
The Forum raised the following possible alternatives:
• parents set the homework for their child's needs
• parents set completion dates
• parents mark the homework
• everyday living homework – setting the table, making the bed, etc
• games
• student self-motivated choices
• family outings
• experience-based learning
• exercise-based learning
• social skills
• Years 3 to 6 homework should be general, not necessarily related to class work
